State-of-the-Art Technology at the Speed of 18,000 Sheets/h

21/08/2022

Back in May, Hofmann GmbH & Co. KG made a decisive move to modernize its production. The company invested in a refurbished 2016 Heidelberg XL 106-2-P 18k, sourced and delivered by allaoui, replacing a 1998 SM 102-2-P that had reached the end of its service life. The payoff was immediate: full-speed production from day one, with zero downtime.

Having established itself as a reliable print partner for demanding commercial and media clients in Bavaria. Operating under the brand Hofmann Druck + Medien, the company serves customers who expect both high visual quality and consistent delivery performance. In an industry where margins depend on throughput and reliability, the choice of press is never just a technical decision — it is a statement about the company's commitment to its customers.

“In order to be a strong partner for our customers, it requires not only know-how but also state-of-the-art technology with simultaneous cost efficiency. With this mindset, we purchased a young used Heidelberg XL from allaoui for our offset printing division."
— Johannes Lindner, Managing Director, Hofmann GmbH & Co. KG

A press that could no longer keep pace

The existing 1998 Heidelberg SM 102-2-P had served Hofmann well, but by 2022 it no longer met the company's requirements. As customer demands for quality and turnaround continued to rise, Hofmann needed a press that would reduce long-term operating costs, raise the technical standard of output, and sustain high production volumes reliably. The gap between what the older machine could deliver and what the market expected had become too wide to ignore.

With this conviction — and a clear technical brief — Hofmann approached allaoui in spring 2022.

A young used machine, fully refurbished

After extensive consultation with allaoui, Hofmann opted for a 2016 Heidelberg XL 106-2-P 18k with 132 million impressions, complemented by a Polar 66 guillotine. The machine was fully cleaned prior to delivery, with perfect jackets and rollers replaced to ensure it could sustain its rated speed of 18,000 sheets per hour in 1/1 configuration. The transaction was handled as part of allaoui's All-in-One package: allaoui managed the dismantling of the old SM 102-2-P, the transport, and the full installation of the new press — all while production at Hofmann continued uninterrupted.

Installed during ongoing production — without a hitch

Running a press swap during live production is one of the more demanding logistics challenges in the industry. At Hofmann, the stakes were high: any extended downtime would have ripple effects across customer schedules. Lindner is candid about the complexity:

Dismantling the old machine while installing the new one during ongoing production was challenging. Thankfully, for all complications that arose during the process, allaoui had a solution ready in no time, which made the project a complete success. The condition of the delivered machine was excellent and it ran perfectly from the first minute."

Looking ahead

The success of the project quickly led to continued collaboration. The former SM 102-2-P, meanwhile, has found a new home — continuing to print at a different location, in line with allaoui's Circular Economy principle of extending the productive life of pre-owned machinery. With the Heidelberg XL 106-2-P now fully integrated into daily production at Hofmann, the company is well-positioned to meet the demands of its clients for years to come — combining the capabilities of a modern press with the economics of a pre-owned investment.
